GUEST BLOGGER: Freelance Journalist and beauty writer Amy Golding

You can’t blame organic skincare brand Melvita for wanting to celebrate its first birthday in style at London’s Century Club.

Since catapulting into the UK last February, the French brand has launched 380 products onto the market, opened a flagship store in Covent Garden and gained backing from natural beauty giant L’Occitane, which acquired Melvita in autumn 2010. For details on some of the products and brand history, see FashionBite’s post ‘NEW LAUNCH-Organic Skincare brand Melvita.’

And there’s more to come. This year the brand will launch a host of new ranges in the UK including suncare, face care and quintessential oil collections. If that’s not enough, in May Melvita will unveil its Algascience Slimming Oil and Exfoliating Scrub. Melvita’s President Bernard Chevilliat promises me I will lose 2cm from around my thighs if I use it every day for a month. Great!

Chevilliat, a biologist and beekeeper, remains as passionate about the brand as when he founded it in 1983 and kindly offered me a guided tour of the new collections. While talking me though the ranges, he confessed he’s had to put beekeeping on the back-burner for now. This comes as no surprise considering he now has a staff count of over 300 people and sits on the board of L’Occitane.

To get a good feel for the brand, pop into its Covent Garden store. It contains two ‘living walls’, covered in plant-life, and offers free skincare consultations.

Happy birthday Melvita!

KICK-START SUMMER: PART II- Neal’s Yard Remedies Detox

Once you’ve got the diet sorted, there’s no better way to kick-start your summer regime than a relaxing, full-body detox.

Neal’s Yard Remedies has a fabulous Spring Detox Package, down from £140 to £95 at the moment- so book in quick. Fashionbite popped down to the Neal’s Yard Remedies Spa store on the Kings Road, London, last week to try it out.

Here are my thoughts..

DETOXIFYING BODY TREATMENT

My first treatment was a detoxifying body scrub. The therapist was fantastic and explained everything thoroughly, so you knew exactly what was coming up next. I started the treatment with a cup of Beautiful Skin tea, which was lovely- really fruity, you can buy it from the Neal’s Yard Remedies store above the Spa rooms.

My therapist then used a body brush to scrub away any dead skin from all over my body and massaged in exfoliator to really get the blood pumping. I love the fact that throughout the entire two and a half hour treatment, evey product used is Neal’s Yard Remedies, which not only smells amazing but is completely organic and natural- so you feel you’re putting goodness on your body as well.

DETOX SAUNA

Once I was scrubbed and pumeled, I headed to the detox sauna. I showered up and lay in a sauna-style room for 15 minutes. The room felt like a sauna but didn’t have the stifling heat that goes with it. Relaxing music was piped into the room and I lay back in the heat dreaming of summer…

I then headed back to the treatment room for probably one of the best back/shoulder massages I’ve ever had- it was AMAZING! Using lymphatic massage, which helps your body drain itself of unwanted toxins-great for detoxing, she put me in an almost coma-like state of relaxation. I’ve had difficulty sleeping recently and find it difficult to switch-off, but this massage absolutely did the trick.

ORGANIC SIGNATURE FACIAL

After the massage, I was treated to a wonderful organic facial which completely refreshed and revitalised my deydrated skin. I was cleansed, steamed, scrubbed and blocked pores were extracted. Then, whilst I relaxed under a lovely, fruity face mask, the therpist massaged my head and shoulders.

After the whole package, I felt amazing- my body had been scrubbed, massaged and cleansed from head to toe. I slept brilliantly that night and my skin was soft and smooth for days after.

If you fancy treating yourself, it’s well worth the money and for two and a half hours it’s great value at £95. It’s also the perfect present for someone who’s really into their organic products, I know my brother’s girlfriend would love it!

NEW LAUNCH: Organic skincare brand Melvita

Fashionbite popped to the UK launch of Melvita this morning, the French skincare brand which already has a monopoly over the organic skincare market in France.

The brand is suprisingly big, the largest certified organic brand in France (according to the company), and has huge plans for the UK market.

It has launched over 300 products here, which you can buy online at www.melvita.co.uk, and plans to open its first UK store in London this summer. It hopes to have 10 UK stores in the next three years.

Melvita is more like a one-stop shop for organic health products, including deodrant, moisturiser, supplements and even toothpaste, rather than simply an organic face cream firm.

The company was founded in the early 1980′s by French biologist and professional beekeeper Bernard Chevilliat. He set up an ecofactory in the beautiful, rural French region of Ardèche, where he has since tested innovative new products for the brand. All products have a stamp of approval from EcoCert, the international organic certification body.

Having tried and tested a number of products, I really like the skincare range. The anti-ageing serum is light and glides on without feeling heavy on the skin- making a great base for make-up. The rose and lavender water sprays are really lovely, both light and refreshing. I’m not keen on creamy cleansers or facial wipes, so these make a perfect alternative.

Price points are more premium, ranging from around £12 to £32, but for a certified organic brand you know you’re paying for the goodness.

I’ve never been swayed by a brand just because it’s organic, first and foremost it must do what it claims to do, and if it’s organic so much the better. However, Melvita seems to do both, which is great news.

The website offers free standard delivery and two free samples on your first order, so why not give it a go…

New Year’s Resolutions- Top Tips

So..it’s that time of year again when we’ve eaten/drunk too much, partied hard and are now looking to 2010 and the inevitable New Year’s Resolutions!

My resolutions will probably follow the lines of most years- exercise more, drink less, eat a healthier diet..etc, etc. However, to give us a helping hand organic skincare firm Neals Yard Remedies has drawn up some tips on how to keep a successful New Year’s Resolution….I know I definitely need the pointers!

  1. Don’t set too many resolutions!
Resist the temptation to run off a list of everything you’ve ever wanted to change. One or two goals will be easier to achieve than a list of twenty, so take one thing at a time and focus on what you really want to gain.
For example, if you’d like to lead a more natural/organic way of life, start with your beauty regime. Buy one essential product, then continue to replace other products with organic versions as and when they run out. It will be expensive to replace everything in one go, so find a starting point and build on that.
  2. Make small changes that will make a big difference to your health and well-being.
Something as simple as adding superberries to your diet will help boost your energy levels and protect skin from the inside out. Products such as Neal’s Yard Remedies Power Berry range, a skincare range filled with radiance-boosting berries, will give skin that much needed New Year’s lift!
  3. Make a Plan. This is the TRUE key to success!
Once you know what your resolution is, try to break it into achievable sections. Nobody accomplishes anything of significance by trying to do it all at once.
  4. Celebrate!
You must reward yourself throughout the progress. Every small accomplishment needs to be recognized and honored- this will give you the encouragement to continue.
  5. Good Luck!

Ethical inspired online

tribe worldwear Online seems to be the birthplace for new ethical fashion labels, a recent one being casualwear brand Tribe World Wear. Interestingly, Tim John- the British creative director/screenwriter whose credits include satirical comedy Spitting Image- is behind the brand, which features t-shirts, hoodies and yogawear. All clothing is produced from 100% Fairtrade bamboo or organic cottons-I have the organic cotton t-shirt (left) and i’m amazed at how soft it is, you can really feel the difference! You can buy the range online at www.tribeworldwear.com . On the down side, the website is not very intuitive..you have to scroll right down to the bottom of the page to view any of the products..but still worth a look.

eco-jewellery A new online jewellery site has sprung up www.katehh.co.uk. The company, based in North Wales, uses recycled modern and vintage biscuit/cake tins to create a range of accessories such as necklaces and bracelets. So if you’re looking for that quirky piece of jewellery..look for further!

Nude’s probiotic skincare..

nude skincare

There’s a fab skincare range called Nude, you can buy it online at www.nudeskincare.com. I’ve been using the age defence moisturiser which is fantastic on my skin and I love the packaging-it’s matt and so soft to touch!! It’s not the packaging..I know, I know..it’s what’s inside that really counts- but this range does not disappoint! The moisturiser I’ve been using took three years to develop and is a combination of orchid/ manketti oil to moisturise the skin and hyaluronic acid to reduce fine lines and wrinkles-it’s also thrown in some natural pre and probiotics for good measure. The result is a light anti-ageing cream that really works! I often find traditional anti-ageing moisturisers can be too heavy/greasy for my skin and can bring me out in spots.

Also, for that extra boost (especially in the winter months) add Nude’s deep cleansing mask to the mix for your weekly skin boost- relax back in the bath for 10 minutes and let the cream do the work.

Enjoy!
