Net-a-porter to launch menswear website ‘Mr Porter’

Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-a-PorterLuxury online fashion group Net-a-porter is launching a menswear website ‘Mr Porter’ in January, for the spring/summer 2011 season.

Mr Porter will launch with over 60 designer fashion labels and a selection of niche specialist brands, along with newly discovered labels from around the world.

The site will stock brands such as Burberry, Ralph Lauren, Lanvin, YSL, Margiela, Balmain, Dunhill, Margaret Howell, Rick Owens, John Lobb and MR Roland Mouret.

Mr Porter will be a separate website with its own dedicated buying team, but run under the umbrella Net-a-porter Group, which also owns designer discount website The Outnet.

Net-a-porter founder Natalie Massenet says: “This is an incredibly exciting new venture for us and one we have been planning for some time. We have always said that Net-a-porter will remain a woman’s brand and now we are ready to create a dedicated men’s shopping destination entirely conceived with the stylish man in mind.

“We have a ready-made customer base for our men’s business. 100% of Net-a-porter customers have a man in their lives in some capacity and 59% of them are married or living with their partners. 3 million unique users trust and love Net-a-porter’s service and will be invited to make a purchase for the men in their lives.

“Additionally we look forward to welcoming a new group of super stylish men who join us to shop for themselves with the same level of service, dedication and commitment that women have had for the last decade.”

Net-a-porter celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

Ebay to launch new fashion site

Ebay.co.uk is launching a new fashion sub site, fashion.ebay.co.uk, in the next few months.

Speaking at Retail Week’s conference this week, Ebay UK managing director Mark Lewis said the site will focus on sellers offering branded fashion in volume. However, he didn’t specify which type of brands.

The idea behind it is to offer Ebay customers a more targeted user experience.

Mark said: “a 30-year old guy buying a DVD player has completely different needs than a 20-year-old woman looking for an outfit for a night out.”

Details of the venture are quite skeletal, but it sounds interesting- although it really depends on what brands are on offer. If it’s for sellers to shift mass market sportswear brands in volume, I wouldn’t call it a specialist fashion site.

Amazon launched a footwear/accessories website in the UK called Javari at the end of last year, see fashionbite’s post Amazon Strikesd Again, so Ebay could be jumping on a similar bandwagon? Watch this space.

Lipstick and Lace

lipstick and lace

A new fashion website Lipstick and Lace has launched, check it out for yourselves at www.lipstickandlaceboutique.com It stocks brands including Arrogant Cat, Folia and Wild Fox and a great mix of vintage pieces- I’ve got my eye on this gorgeous vintage strawberry box (below), would make a fab handbag!box

However, what’s really interesting about the site is the personal shopping service offered by owner SallyDaynes. She is on hand from 9am-9 pm every day to offer shopping advice to customers. Sally is encouraging shoppers either to email or call her to discuss what they’re looking for-her aim is to get to know her customers on the same basis as if they were visiting in store. It’s an interesting idea. It’s not enough now just to sell online, websites are looking to offer the same customer experience as a retail store, if not more, to attract shoppers. I’m not sure how she’ll cope though if there’s a mad rush of customers wanting advice in their lunch hour or at 9pm…two of the busiest shopping times online..but giving a face/voice to her online store is a great way to erradicate any fears people might have about buying online- and a fantastic way to get to know her customers.
