London Fashion Week: Falguni & Shane Peacock AW11 catwalk show

Catwalk Report: Falguni & Shane Peacock AW11

Dominatrix leather and embellished studding created a hard edge, rock ‘n roll inspired collection for husband and wife design team Falguni & Shane Peacock’s AW11 show. Striking thigh high leather, bandage strip boots and short printed dresses with stud embellishment were juxtaposed against a story of long, luxe couture evening gowns in striking nude and teal blue…perfect for awards season!

In addition to bold detailing and craftsmanship, the designers’ used experimental layering techniques with crochet, lace and leather panels which were topped with dazzling gold/silver/bronze sequins. Cat suits, body con dresses and bodies were all key shapes of the collection. Falguni & Shane’s signature feathered look was less extravagant than previous seasons, but a nod to feathers was present using panel strips on dresses. Colours were exciting, with bolts of electric blue, crimson red and gold slashed against a base of black and slate grey.

Falguni & Shane Peacock said: “When we first showed at London Fashion Week On|Off were our platform, and they have been supporting us ever since. On|Off has a knack of doing something different, which is why we still choose to work with them. The look for today’s show is Rock ‘n Roll glamour. It is dark and edgy but elegant.”

Backstage Beauty

Backstage, glamorous royal blue and gold dresses lay sprawled next to sexed-up leather paneled creations. In wardrobe, sultry-looking models slipped into thigh-high boots and metal-studded leotards, while Shane and Falguni Peacock put the finishing touches to outfits.

Noted make-up artist Alex Bryne completed the look with elongated eyes and glossed skin.
The look was kinky glamour with a rock ‘n roll, edgy feel, which Bryne created using only Benefit products. “Their range is diverse and I can do anything with their make-up,” she said.

Dark, smokey eyes had an oil-slick feel. This look was enhanced in the hair department, where a team of hairdressers lead by Nick Williams, of John Jennings Salon, put the finishing touches to backcombed locks, huge quiffs and gelled-backed sides.
Thirty minutes behind schedule the models finally lined up for catwalk. The beautifully extravagantly elegant look was well worth the delay.

FashionBite blogs live from London Fashion Week: DAY 1

London Fashion Week kicked off today and FashionBite is blogging for On|Off again this season, so keep posted for catwalk updates and backstage gossip over the next few days..

First off, FashionBite reporters Emily Seares and Amy Golding reported on the on schedule Jena Theo AW11 show…

CATWALK REPORT

On|Off kicked off London Fashion Week this season with a dark and dramatic on-schedule catwalk show from design duo Jena Theo. Designers Jenny Holmes and Dimitris Theocharidis combined fantasy fiction and Norse mythology to showcase a gothic runway of bold silhouettes, chunky wool knitwear, textured draping, patchwork leather jackets, opulent silk modal jerseys and sand wash silk satins.

Models from the show, called Valkyrie, standing for a band of celestial female warriers, dominated with strong silhouettes in a palette of black, charcoal, grey and ecru. Inspired by elements of 1980’s cinema, with references to Conan the barbarian, key pieces included an over-sized quilted anorak which descended the catwalk to rapturous applause. Draping, leather, contrasting textures and sleeveless capes with exposed pockets featured heavily in the collection. Crisp over-sized white shirts also made an appearance along with double denim, from clean treated washes to dirtier blacks and greys.

BACKSTAGE BEAUTY

Backstage at Jena Theo, stylists created a futuristic look with dark, smouldering eyes on a nude base for the fashion designer’s sci-fi themed show. Make-up artists painted dramatic, thick black strips across models’ eyes and eyebrows.

Smudged, coal eye make-up was offset with a matt base, bronzed cheeks and nude lips.

Models had long, tussled hair, left loose down their backs. Stylists added to the look by creating elegant ‘halos’ with twists of hair looped around models’ heads.

Charlie Le Mindu wins On|Off Visionary Award for London Fashion Week

Charlie Le Mindu SS11Charlie Le Mindu, SS11London Fashion Week sensation Charlie Le Mindu has been awarded On|Off’s Visionary Award, meaning his AW11 catwalk show at LFW next month will be sponsored, along with production and all casting elements.

Charlie Le Mindu was the talk of London Fashion Week last season amongst journalists (and photographers in particular!), after he sent catwalk models down the runway completely nude (AND SHAVED!)..aside from a huge wig installation/hat. Charlie Le Mindu’s shows have got more and more controversial each season, check out my blog post ‘London Fashion Week: Day 3′..so I can’t wait to see what he has in store for February!

Charlie said: “When I got the Visionary Award, it was the day before Christmas, and it was the coolest present I could get. I’ve loved On|Off since I first showed. Their choice of venue is really cool and fits perfectly with my collection for the catwalk show…”

On|Off fashion director Claire Ginzler added: “It is great that On|Off is in the position where we can help aspiring, talented designers to progress within the industry such as Charlie. Getting this sponsorship really does help designers and can be the difference between professionally showing as part of fashion week or not.”

On|Off’s theme for LFW this season ‘Black|Light’ will play host to 10 designer catwalk shows including the on-schedule Jena Theo and Louise Gray.

Off Schedule highlights include Jayne Pierson’s debut catwalk show and retuning designers Pam Hogg, Charlie le Mindu and Falguni & Shane Peacock.

As well as the catwalk schedule, On|Off will showcase a presentation from Ada Zanditon whilst the exhibition includes collections from: Tessa Edwards, Angeline Lee and debuting the ‘one-to-watch’ Bronwen Marshall.

I’ll be writing the blog for On|Off at London Fashion Week again this season-check out my blog last season at OnOff.tv.

British Fashion Council Announces Fashion Forward Winners for LFW

Peter Pilotto, spring/summer 11

Peter Pilotto, spring/summer 11

The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced that designers Meadham Kirchhoff, Peter Pilotto and Todd Lynn will receive Fashion Forward sponsorship for two seasons to show at February 2011 and September 2011 London Fashion Week.

The Fashion Forward scheme, which is sponsored by Coutts & Co and supported by the London Development Agency, was established 5 years ago to provide funding to emerging British designers to showcase their collections during LFW, along with access to knowledge to help develop their businesses.

I’m really happy to see that, despite there being budget cuts left, right and centre, we’re still offering support to our up and coming British designers. I write for On|Off during London Fashion Week, the innovative fashion showcase which helps emerging fashion designers showcase during London Fashion Week, alongside putting on catwalk shows for big on schedule design names. In fact, one of the first shows I saw at On|Off was Peter Pilotto a number of seasons ago, which was amazing! On|Off are known for spotting new and fresh design talent.

On|Off is showing again this season during London Fashion Week at a fab new venue with some fantastic visuals such as 3D films and loads of amazing designers…I can’t wait!

Previous Fashion Forward winners have included Christopher Kane, Erdem, Giles Deacon, Jonathan Saunders, Louise Goldin, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Roksanda Illincic and Sinha-Stanic.

Christopher Raeburn parachute jackets

Christopher RaeburnChristopher RaeburnChristopher RaeburnI saw Christopher Raeburn last month at Estethica, the British Fashion Council’s ethical arm which showcases cutting edge designers (many of whom also show at London Fashion Week) committed to working eco sustainably and I love, love his collection!

His outerwear range is made from a patchwork of recycled materials from old military parachutes, with bursts of fluorescent colour. The jackets are so lightweight, perfect for transitional wear and are all made in the designer’s East London Studio.

I was lusting after some Christopher Raeburn jackets in Browns Focus the other day…will have to save up!

British Fashion Council announces NEW GEN designers for London Fashion Week

Louise Gray showcasing her spring/summer 11 collection

The British Fashion Council (BFC), the body behind London Fashion Week (LFW), has announced its list of fashion designers who will receive NEW GEN sponsorship for London Fashion Week this February.

Designers David Koma, Holly Fulton, Louise Gray, Mary Katrantzou and Michael van der Ham will all receive sponsorship for their autumn/winter catwalk shows.

NEW GEN, established in 1993, supports emerging designers at LFW and is sponsored by Topshop. It is now seen as a recognised benchmark for up and coming design talent- its alumni include Alexander McQueen, Matthew Williamson, Boudicca, Giles Deacon, Jonathan Saunders, Christopher Kane, Marios Schwab, Richard Nicoll, Erdem and Meadham Kirchhoff.

I saw Louise Gray (pictured) and reviewed her ss11 catwalk show for OnOff at London Fashion Week last season, see my blog post ‘A Riot of Colour at Louise Gray’s First Standalone Show.‘ I love her work- it’s fun, fresh and the collection was perfect for spring/summer. She also does a line for Asos. I can’t wait to see what she has to offer for autumn/winter!

Presentation sponsorship was awarded to: Christopher Raeburn, Craig Lawrence, JS Lee, JW Anderson (film presentation) and Nasir Mazhar.

Installation sponsorship was awarded to: Dominic Jones and Jordan Askill.

Exhibition sponsorship was awarded to: Chau Har Lee, Christopher Raeburn, Craig Lawrence, David Koma, Dominic Jones, Fannie Schiavoni, Felicity Brown, Heikki Salonen, Holly Fulton, Jordan Askill, JS Lee, JW Anderson, Louise Gray, Mary Katrantzou, Michael van der Ham, Nasir Mazhar, Thomas Tait and Yang Du.

I saw Christopher Raeburn at Estethica a few weeks ago, see my blog post: ‘Eco-Fashion, the future choice for fashion consumers?’ I’ve got some pics from that event I must put up, but I did really like Christopher’s work- he uses old military parachute materials to make outerwear. The designs are great!

Yang Du is also a fantastic designer- her crazy, cartoon-inspired designs are instantly recognizable and her work is quirky and original. I wrote a post about her at London Fashion Week a few seasons ago, see ‘London Fashion Week Dazzles on First Day.’

Despite times being tough, it’s great to see we’re still investing in our new fashion talent!
