Archetypal fashion columnist and Vogue editor Diana Vreeland once told her personal secretary: “I am extremely disappointed to see that we have used practically no pearls at all in the past few issues. In fact, many necklines could have been helped by pearls. Nothing gives the luxury of pearls. Please keep them in mind.”
It seems Karl Lagerfeld got the memo – huge, opulent pearls brought old school glamour to the Chanel Paris Fashion Week catwalk. They came gobstopper size on monochrome dresses, dotted throughout tousled braids and in heavy wreaths around necklines. We love this look, and it’s so easy to achieve – layer a few strings of thick, heavy pearls over a high neckline, or wind around one wrist. Achieving hair like a Chanel model has never been simpler – just tease your hair into a fishplait (the messier the better) and dot a few delicate pearl hairpins wherever you fancy.
Being the timeless classic that they are, pearl imitations are not difficult to source on the high street. You can find them on hair clips and jewellery in Topshop, H&M, New Look and River Island, but we love these pearly pins by Radiance Boutique, £26 from Notonthehighstreet.com.
