LFW SS13: Pheobe English “A True Talent”
The most exciting show I’ve seen so far at Vauxhall, Phoebe English. After last season’s interesting combinations of contrasting fabrics, I was really looking forward to seeing what the designer had in store for spring/summer. Her beautiful use of alternative materials to create a ‘caging’ and ‘lattice’ effect over soft and hard fabrics was nothing short of what to expect from this brilliant emerging designer.
The opening look of the show, a beautiful loose fitted dress with belt and back detailing set the tone for what turned out to be a stunning collection – adapting her trademark talent of taking unconventional materials and applying them to the ‘caged’ technique produced beautiful sleeves, interesting necklines and visually interesting detailing on each garment.
The back was a huge feature of this collection, whilst constriction and cover seemed to be translated by the front of each look, the back was beautifully crafted, with a large circle cut out, gathered to create a flattering frame to the slender back of each model. Another beautiful detail was the belt, creeping through the mid-waist of most looks, in the same fabric as the garment.
The fabrics were neutral and relaxed, which added a nice dynamic to the constricted aesthetic of the cage sleeves and the belt detailing. A perfect collection and a beautiful adaptation of what we saw last season, Phoebe English has found her signature and continues to grow each season, a true talent!
