Our favourite place to pick up one-off designs, home-grown vintage colossus Beyond Retro needs no introduction. We’ve found some amazing pieces at the Brick Lane store over the years, sniffing out unique handbags, dresses and shoes that always have a great story to tell.
We love rummaging through Beyond Retro’s new arrivals, as we know we can encounter true pieces of history if we look hard enough. Selling a huge range of clothing and accessories, Beyond Retro is now celebrating everyone on the planet’s staple wardrobe item: denim.
Shoppers can now get their hands on an exclusive range of hand-picked authentic denim workwear at the store, including rare collectables dating from as far back as the 1930′s. Expect to see Type II “Big E” Levi’s denim jackets as well as more than 100 pairs of 501′s from the 1950′s to ’70s. Usually snapped up by buyers, collectors and rivet heads in a matter of minutes, there’s now a chance for us mere mortals to own something momentous.
Originally a staple piece of workwear, the functional cotton fabric had gained iconic status by the middle of the 20th century. The “overall” evolved into the “jean” thanks to rebellious, trend-setting youths who consequently dominated mid-century culture. Synonymous with American history, blue Levi’s jeans are the ultimate fashion and textile collectable. The valuable pieces at Beyond Retro have a distinctive past told through the fabric’s age and patina, which gives these rare items an unparalleled lived-in quality.
Entitled Jeaneology, Beyond Retro is currently hosting a week-long celebration of these items, so make sure you go along to explore the incredible histories of the stunning pieces available to buy. We went down to the London Brick Lane launch this week and enjoyed a close-up look at the range. We enjoyed a lovely performance by Wheatly and Sons, wandering through the store with some tasty Southern-style Jeremiah Weed beverages. And no, we couldn’t resist snapping up our own little piece of the past!
