A playful encounter was promised and a joyful time we certainly had, stepping back in time to when women wore suspenders, garter belts and confidence-boosting corsets on a daily basis (not just on anniversary night) and when snuff was still the hit of choice.
FashionBite was lucky enough to be invited to an evening of preview and vintage frolics at Playful Promises, the vintage lingerie store which opened its Boxpark boutique back in December 2011.
The black and white tiled flooring, mis-matched hat boxes, dropped chandelier and bottles of gin created the perfect surroundings for the quaint retro feel. Stunning underwear sets from the Anatomy of a Heart AW12 collection, including latex nipple tassels, the ‘Heart breaker’ frilled sky blue silk set with darling hearts accentuating the breasts to perfection and ruby basques, that even Dita would be proud of.
Branching out into swimwear, which has a more commercial, fashion forward feel to it with the floral print laid onto vintage designs (look out for the high waisted briefs coming soon- a saviour in swimwear design!) The store now includes its newly launched womenswear line of exquisitely embroidered kimono jackets, curve-enhancing satin peplum dresses and a FashionBite favourite, the tuxedo playsuit.
Launching in 2004, Playful Promises has gone from strength to glorious feminine strength and now features brands such as Motel and What Katy Did (which includes the dusky pink bullet bra; perfect in creating your very own, Louise Gray ‘worn-over-a T-shirt’ moment). If you cannot make it down to the boudoir in East London or if Playful Promises online do not have your size, then log onto Topshop or Asos where the underwear treats are also available.
With an extremely sexy, black ‘Vamp’ dress with suspender clips safely inside the goody bag, there was nothing left to do than take a rather large pinch of cupcake scented, vintage snuff from the trunk … well when in Rome (Shoreditch)!
