FashionBite editor Emily Seares was a judge at the UK finals of the Triumph Inspiration Awards, alongside designers Felder Felder, model Poppy Delevingne and British Fashion Council chief executive Caroline Rush. We caught up with UK winner Sian Whitefoot from DeMontfort University, who will be heading off to represent Britain in the Shanghai Global Finals, to find out what inspired her winning piece…
What Was The Inspiration Behind Your Design? (pictured on the model top)
“My real burst of inspiration came from some images I found on a blog, which were photographs of owl butterfly eggs. When I zoomed in they displayed these amazing sheer spheres, with thicker white panelling running symmetrically throughout. When I zoomed out the eggs looked like hundreds of tiny beads that glistened when catching the light. I knew I wanted my design to incorporate both aspects.
How Did You Produce The Piece?
I began by adapting the basic corset block. I had to split and spread each panel without affecting the waist. The bra and thong were adapted from basic patterns also. The bra was sewn in organza, which provided me with several problems because it is such a delicate fabric that frays easily. However, after hours of persuasive manipulation I got there in the end. I also used a lot of guipure lace to add texture and beading with Swarovski crystals which provided extra sparkle.
What Are You Looking Forward To Most About The Shanghai Global Finals?
I am most looking forward to seeing my piece again on the catwalk. It was such an amazing feeling in London, that as soon as it was over I just wanted it to happen all over again. I am also obviously thrilled about the chance to visit such an amazing City (despite being terrified of flying and it being a 12 hour flight!)”
