Matalan ss10 trend report

Matalan’s offer just gets better and better and ss10 does not disappoint! This gorgeous grey waterfall jacket (below) looks fantastic, the fabric feels amazing and it only costs £28.
Studding and embellishment on shoes, handbags and leather..a strong trend for autumn has continued into spring/summer.

Saw some gorgeous Miu Miu studded leather handbags at Liberty the other day…Matalan’s versions are a bit more affordable!
Underwear as outerwear, a key trend for ss10, was also shown off at Matalan. Love this floral print top. Along with bright florals and exotic, flower prints in abundance..looks great with a tan! Nautical stripes continue to be a strong trend for summer, love this striped jumper dress -only costs £14!
Matalan’s price points are fantastic for the quality of the product. You can buy all items online from early next year at www.matalan.co.uk.

I also hopped into bed with Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen…all in the name of research of course!
We chatted about Laurence’s latest home/bed range for Matalan, which is bigger than ever before, and his upcoming new TV series. Laurence says: “The range is inspired by opera -it’s both opulent and theatrical. I’m really proud of it, I’ve turned up the volume on colour and it’s bigger than ever.”

The range does look fantastic and the new furniture items, such as a gorgeous glass-topped table, look like expensive vintage. Laurence says: “I’ll be moving more and more into furniture, the feedback has been really positive.”

Laurence is also launching a new TV series in January called House Gift on ITV. It will be on every weekday at around 4pm. He will be pitted against two experts each day to find the perfect house gift for various different households, using a budget of £200, £500 or £1000. Laurence says: “We have to find one thing which sums up people’s tastes. I’ve had fun with it, but the experts take it very seriously. It will be high end, Come Dine With Me style.”

Winter sun..?

moontide 1 I popped down to the press day of Australian swimwear brands Moontide and Bond-eye to check out their offer for ss10. Although it’s hard to imagine bikini-wearing weather with the rain pouring down outside, freezing temperatures and 70 mph winds..the burst of bright colours and floral prints gave me a glimpse of things to come! Much of Moontide’s offer (above) is also reversible -two for the price if one- so great if you’re on a budget! You can buy it online at www.very.co.uk. I loved Bond-eye’s range (below), the designs are really fun and young…I just need to book my winter-sun break now to wear them…! bond eye 1 bond eye 2
You can buy Bond-eye online at www.very.co.uk.

I also tried my first St.Tropez spray tan…which was amazing! The tanning expert sprayed me once all over, then went over it again with a darker shade to contour in more of a shape to the tan- the result: a toned look which slims you immediately! See my before and after shots below…
st.tropez 1 tropez 2 What I really liked about the tan is its natural look, I hate it when fake tan looks obvious and caked on..footballer’s wives-style!

Prices start from about £25 and should last up to a week if you keep moisturising. Check out St.Tropez’s website www.st-tropez.co.uk for your nearest salon. If you’re looking for that perfect party dress..accessorise with a St.Tropez tan to complete the look- it really gives you that winter pick-me-up!

Jaeger launches new line for ss10

mustard trench Following the success of Jaeger’s 125 collection, which launched last season to celebrate 125 years of the brand, Jaeger continues to draw on the brand’s rich heritage with a new limited edition range called Jaeger by Jaeger. I popped down to Jaeger’s press day yesterday and saw this fantastic mustard trench, which has been inspired by a Jaeger design from the 1960′s and reworked to make it relevant today. The whole collection gives a fresh spin on the label’s heritage with modern fabrics, finishes and cuts. You can get your hands on this gorgeous trench, along with other key items, from early next year at www.jaeger.co.uk..
jaeger 1 I also loved Jaeger’s accessories for ss10- the wedge shoes are fantastic! Seen lots of wedge heals- wooden and cork- around for spring/summer..I know the gold ones aren’t technically wedge- but loved the heal!

Dove’s winter treats

dove hand cream I wouldn’t normally dedicate a post to a hand cream, but Dove’s new Regenerating Night beauty hand cream is so fantastic- just had to flag it up! You can buy it online at Chemist Direct for just over £2 and it really works. It’s a blend of nourishing micro-capsules and soothing honey with a gorgeous scent which is meant to ‘calm your senses.’ Rub it into your hands before bed, it’s fast absorbing and works whilst you sleep. When I wake up in the morning my hands feel so soft to touch..it’s a great cream and doesn’t cost the earth!

On the subject of Dove, it’s also recently brought out a body lotion which looks fab on your skin for a night out. Dove’s supreme silk beauty body lotion gives skin a luxurious, silky feeling and contains light reflecting particles which give it a natural shimmering glow. I use it on top of Dove’s summer glow tinted moisturiser- which is great on winter skin. Fake tans can sometimes look too obvious in the winter, when skin’s naturally quite pale, but tinted moisturisers add a bit of colour without looking like you’ve faked it. You can buy online at www.superdrug.com or a gift set at www.boots.com.

For an intense body moisturiser, Vaseline has also brought out a new body gel with aloe vera which cools and refreshes the skin..it’s perfect for after a workout. vaseline You can buy online at Superdrug.

Fitness shoes..do they work?

sketchers 1 I find myself less and less inclined to go to the gym in the winter months- as the nights draw in I just want to be sat in front of the TV in my pyjamas with a glass of wine! With that in mind, I thought this is the perfect time to trial a few fitness shoe brands- which claim to tone muscle, reduce cellulite, boost posture and burn calories..all on your way to work..! I’ve been trialling Sketchers Shape-ups and the Fitflop Gogh (see below).

You can buy both from online shoe store Rubbersole, visit it at www.rubbbersole.co.uk.

MBT also has a great range of fitness shoes.
skechers-shape-ups fitflops_gogh
I’ve been wearing the Sketchers trainers walking to work, running around London all day from one meeting to the next and even to press days..which gets a few funny looks! They’re not exactly fashion items, but they don’t look too bad under black trousers or teamed with some chunky black tights..you can just pop on your heels when you get to work.

The Sketchers trainers are incredibly comfortable, your feet sink into them with every step and the multi-layered sole gives extra cushioning and a bounce to your step…but do they actually work? The shoes claim to get you into shape, without having to go to the gym! Having worn them non-stop for the last few weeks, I can definitely say they work..but I don’t think they should replace a gym workout altogether! My legs and bum feel more toned and the skin texture on the back of my legs appears smoother, it doesn’t get rid of cellulite completely but I can definitely see an improvement.

As for calorie burning, you can feel your legs being worked a lot harder just from walking- but when you walk up and down stairs..you can really feel the difference! I’ve been setting myself challenges like always walking up escalators at tube stations..it’s not too bad in the shoes because your feet are cushioned- but when you get to the top you can really feel the burn..so it’s definitely doing the job!

Having said that, I haven’t felt as dramatic a difference when wearing the Fitflop Gogh (inspired by the clogg) although I’ve been wearing the shoes more around the house and locally-rather than into town. Your feet aren’t as cushioned as in the Shape-ups, but they still feel good to walk in. Fitflops specialise in a great range of summer items, such as flip-flops, which are fantastic for City-breaks where you’ll be doing a lot of walking…although I’m not too sure about their fashion credentials..fit flops 2

So..the conclusion for fitness footwear…I’d give Sketchers a 9, I don’t think I could live without them now! Also, because they’re so comfy to walk in- I find myself getting off the bus a stop early to walk back..just to get some more walking time in. With the Fitflops, I’d probably give them a 7, although I can’t compare like-for-like, I didn’t feel they gave me quite the comfy workout that the Sketchers did.

Burberry launches social networking site

artofthetrench-300x168 Iconic British brand Burberry has teamed up with facebook to launch a social networking site which celebrates the trenchcoat. The site www.artofthetrench.com invites photographers and trench coat lovers to take pics of themselves outside wearing a Burberry trenchcoat. You can then upload the pics via facebook, which has a link on the site. Trench wearers can submit as many pics as they like and Burberry will pick its favourites to feature on the site.

The trench was first designed by Burberry founder Thomas Burberry for British Army officers in 1914, and it’s still one of Burberry’s top sellers! You can read more about the history of the trench on the site.

To kick-start the launch, photographer Scott Schuman from fashion blog The Sartorialist has taken some fantastic pics of Burberry trench coat wearers from cities across the world, such as London, Milan, New York and Sao Paulo-you can check them out for yourselves on the site.

Social media has become such a key way for brands to communicate to younger shoppers. I wonder how many other designers will follow in Burberry’s footsteps…?

So…dust off your trench and get posing!

Pond’s winter wonders

If you’re looking for a decent winter face cream on a budget..look no further than Pond’s. It has two fantastic moisturisers which only cost £3.99 and really hydrate the skin. ponds 1ponds 2 I’ve been using this one (below), the Pond’s Hydro-Nourishing Cream, it’s a lighter-based cream but still a fab moisturiser. It contains evening primrose oil, which helps moisturise the skin, alongside hydro-elastine and liposomes which make a great base for make-up. Frosty nights and dry central heating can also really dry skin out in the winter, so Pond’s has a heavier moisturiser which helps protect against the elements. It’s called Pond’s Dry Skin Cream, still coming in a steal at £3.99, and is great for more mature or dry skin. The cream has a smooth, silky texture so it’s easily absorbed. Both creams come in glass jars (see above), so also look great on your dressing table..no one need know they were under £4!
